Kids, if you're old enough to use a hot glue gun, or you have a fairly competent and suggestible parent around, try this at home:

Make a cloppity horse puppet!

You will need:

2 corks
a chopstick
beads
shells
a tassle
a hot glue gun

Step 1:

Make the horses' body by jabbing the small end of your chopstick into a cork. The cork is the horses' back and the chopstick is the neck, so poke the stick into the cork just where you think the horses' neck should be. Glue the chopstick in place with the hot glue.

Step 2:

Add the horses' head by glueing the second cork onto the chopstick a little ways up the neck. I suggest a jaunty angle, as if your horse is looking just a little askance.

Step 3:

Poke four pieces of yarn into the bottom of the first cork (use a pencil or some other pokey implement) to dangle down as the horses' legs. Glue the yarn in place. When the glue is cooled and hardened, glue shells on for the horses' feet.

If you don't have shells try beads. If you don't have beads try dry kidney beans. If you don't have kidney beans try tiny pebbles. If you don't have tiny pebbles try coins. What gives this puppet great movement is the cloppity action of the hard, free-dangling shells striking the surface of whatever stage he clops across. So make sure whatever you use has enough hardness and weight to give your horse cloppitude.

Step 4:

Glue the eyes (beads) and ears onto your horses' head. If you don't have shells for ears, try cutting some ear shapes out of fabric or cardboard. Then embellish your horse with a mane and tail. I poked a tassle into the back end of the cork and glued it in place. Then I put a line of hot glue down the back of the horses' neck where I thought the mane should be. I snipped the bottom inch off the tassle and pressed the ends of the tassle into the glue to create the mane. You could also use yarn or embroidery thread to make a mane and tail.

Good luck!
